The Agency SEO Tech Stack We Run Luckywebs On

The tools a working UK agency actually needs: crawling, search data, rank tracking, reporting and AI, and where one platform consolidates the stack.

Last updated: 5 July 2026 Changelog: 5 July 2026: all prices verified against vendor pricing pages ahead of first publish.

People ask us which SEO agency tools are actually worth paying for, usually after being quoted several separate subscriptions by someone else. This page is our honest answer. We are Luckywebs, a London SEO and web agency with clients in the home improvement trades, law, and cooker e-commerce, and below is the stack we run the agency on, category by category, with verified prices and no padding.

Disclosure: some links on this page are affiliate links. If you sign up through one we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. We only recommend tools we would genuinely use.

Which SEO agency tools does a small team actually need?

A small agency needs SEO agency tools covering six jobs: crawling, search performance data, keyword and competitor research, rank tracking, client reporting, and the platform the sites themselves are built on. An SEO tech stack is simply the set of tools an agency uses to do those six jobs repeatedly, for every client, without reinventing the process each month.

That definition matters because most tool bloat comes from buying overlapping products for the same job. Our approach is to use free tools where free is genuinely best in class (Google’s own data sources), pay for one desktop crawler, and consolidate the recurring platform jobs (rank tracking, scheduled audits, research, reporting) into a single subscription rather than three or four.

What do we use for crawling and technical audits?

For crawling, we use Screaming Frog SEO Spider, the desktop crawler that has been the industry standard for technical audits for over a decade. A licence costs £199 per year as of July 2026 (source: screamingfrog.co.uk), and the free version crawls up to 500 URLs, which is enough to audit many small local business sites at no cost.

The job here is finding what is silently wrong with a site: redirect chains, broken internal links, duplicate titles, pages blocked from indexing, orphaned URLs. A crawler visits every page the way a search engine would and lists the problems in bulk. Because our founder Mo Rafi comes from 15 years of front-end development, crawl output goes straight into fixes rather than into a PDF of recommendations for someone else to ignore.

Where does our search and traffic data come from?

Our search and traffic data comes from Google Search Console and Google Analytics 4, and both are free. Google Search Console shows the queries a site appears for, its clicks and impressions, and its indexing status straight from Google. GA4 shows what visitors do once they arrive: which pages they land on, and which enquiries and calls they generate.

No paid tool replaces these two, because every third party estimates what Google hands over here for nothing. The paid platforms earn their keep by adding what Google will not give you: competitor visibility, daily rank tracking, and historical depth. Our rule is blunt: if a tool mostly repackages Search Console data, we do not pay for it. We connect both to every client project from day one, because the data only accumulates from the moment you set it up.

How do we handle keyword and competitor research?

For keyword and competitor research, we recommend running it inside SE Ranking rather than paying for a separate research suite. Both of its plans include keyword research, competitor analysis and backlink data alongside rank tracking and audits, so research stops being its own line item on the agency’s costs.

The research job itself is unglamorous: pull the keywords competitors rank for, export the data, and map one primary keyword and a handful of supporting keywords to each page before anything gets written. Katy Mironenko, our Head of SEO, runs this mapping discipline across our client work: dataset in, page map out, no keywords invented to flatter a pitch deck.

This is also where we should be straight with you: SE Ranking is the consolidation platform we recommend to agencies and are adopting at Luckywebs, not a tool we have run for years. We will add real workflow evidence to this page as our own account builds up history, rather than faking screenshots now.

What do we recommend for rank tracking?

For rank tracking, we recommend SE Ranking. A rank tracker is software that records where a site appears in search results for a defined set of keywords, checked daily, so you can prove movement to a client instead of asserting it. SE Ranking’s Core plan tracks 2,000 keywords daily; Growth tracks 5,000 (as of July 2026).

Here is how the two plans compare, using the GBP prices shown on seranking.com to UK visitors as of July 2026:

CoreGrowth
Monthly billing£95.00/month£209.00/month
Annual billing (20% off)£76.00/month£167.20/month
Projects1030
Manager seats13
Daily keyword checks2,0005,000
Audit pages per month250,0002,000,000
Historical data6 monthsAll time

For a solo consultant or a small agency, Core covers a realistic client list. Growth is the agency tier: more projects, more seats, and all-time historical data, which matters when a client asks what happened two years ago. Both come with a 14-day free trial, no card required (as of July 2026).

How do we produce client reports without a separate reporting tool?

We produce client reports through the same platform that holds the rankings, audits and analytics connections, which is exactly where SE Ranking consolidates hardest. White label reporting means the reports carry your agency’s branding rather than the tool vendor’s, on your own domain, so the client experience stays yours.

SE Ranking includes its report builder on every plan, and the white label layer (plus a lead generator widget) comes via the Agency Pack add-on at £49 per month, available on annual billing only, as of July 2026. For agencies currently paying separately for a rank tracker, an audit tool and a reporting dashboard, this is the arithmetic to check: one subscription against three.

Monthly reporting quietly eats agency hours: pulling rank, audit and analytics data together by hand, client by client, every month. A report that assembles itself from live data, under your own branding, is the difference between reporting being a product and being a chore. Robert Malnieks, our Client Strategy Director, owns the client-facing side of our reporting, which is exactly where that saved time goes.

How do we use AI in auditing and content workflows?

We use AI as an assistant inside the workflow, not as the workflow. In practice that means using AI tooling to triage large crawl exports, summarise audit findings into plain English for clients, and draft content briefs from an approved keyword map. A human checks every output before a client sees it, and published copy is edited by people who know the client’s trade.

We will not dress this up with invented benchmarks. What we can say is where the platform side is heading: SE Ranking sells an AI Search add-on for tracking how a brand shows up in AI-generated answers, priced at £69 per month, or £55.20 per month on annual billing, as of July 2026. As more buyers ask ChatGPT or Google’s AI results before they search normally, AI visibility becomes something clients ask agencies to report on, and it helps when that lives in the same reporting stack. The honest caution: AI saves time on triage and drafting, but it does not replace knowing which fix is worth a developer’s afternoon.

Why do we build client sites on Astro?

We build client sites on Astro because it outputs plain static HTML, which is fast by default and has almost nothing to hack or maintain. Astro is a free, open source web framework: no licence fee, no plugin subscriptions, no monthly page builder cost. On the cost-of-stack table below, the build platform is the cheapest line there is.

This is an unusual choice for an agency, and it comes from our history. Mo Rafi spent 15 years in front-end development and taught WordPress workshops in London as far back as 2011 (the course reviews are still on our homepage), so moving our builds from WordPress to static HTML was a deliberate decision, not a fashion. The trade-off is honest too: Astro suits brochure sites, service businesses and content-led e-commerce, and a client needing complex logged-in functionality would get a different recommendation from us.

What does SEO software for agencies cost per month?

SEO software for agencies costs from roughly £142 per month on this stack, because most of the heavy lifting sits in one consolidated subscription and two of the six categories are free. Every price below is as shown on the vendor’s own pricing page as of July 2026, in GBP as sourced.

CategoryToolPrice (as of July 2026)
CrawlingScreaming Frog SEO Spider£199/year (about £16.60/month)
Search dataGoogle Search ConsoleFree
AnalyticsGoogle Analytics 4Free
Research, rank tracking, audits, reportingSE Ranking Core (annual billing)£76.00/month
White label + lead generationSE Ranking Agency Pack (annual only)+£49.00/month
Site buildsAstroFree, open source
Total (small agency, Core)about £142/month
Total (larger agency, Growth at £167.20/month)about £233/month

Two notes on reading that table honestly. First, Screaming Frog’s free tier (500 URLs) means a brand new consultant could start the crawling column at £0. Second, when people search for software for SEO agencies they are usually pricing up three or four separate platforms; the consolidation here is the point, not any single line.

Which line items does SE Ranking replace?

SE Ranking replaces the separate subscriptions an agency would otherwise run for rank tracking, scheduled site audits, keyword and competitor research, backlink data, and white label client reporting. Those are five jobs that commonly arrive as three or more invoices; on this stack they arrive as one, from £76 per month plus the £49 Agency Pack (annual billing, as of July 2026).

What it does not replace, and we would rather say so than oversell it: it does not replace Screaming Frog for deep, ad-hoc desktop crawling with custom extraction, it does not replace Search Console and GA4 as sources of truth, and it does not build websites. A consolidation platform earns its place by removing invoices, not by pretending the remaining tools are optional.

If you run an agency and want to see whether the numbers work for your client list, the trial is the honest test: 14 days, no card required, as of July 2026.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best SEO agency tools for a small team?

For a small team, the strongest starting stack is Google Search Console and GA4 (free) for data, Screaming Frog SEO Spider (£199/year as of July 2026) for crawling, and one consolidated platform such as SE Ranking for rank tracking, research, audits and client reporting. That covers every recurring agency job with one paid subscription and one paid licence.

How much does SEO software for agencies cost?

On the stack described on this page, from about £142 per month: SE Ranking Core at £76/month on annual billing plus the £49/month Agency Pack, and Screaming Frog at £199/year, with Search Console, GA4 and Astro all free (prices as of July 2026, GBP as shown on the vendors’ pricing pages).

Can SE Ranking replace Screaming Frog?

Partly. SE Ranking’s website audit runs scheduled cloud crawls (250,000 pages per month on Core, 2 million on Growth, as of July 2026), which covers routine monitoring for most client sites. We still keep a desktop crawler for ad-hoc deep dives and custom extraction, but many agencies could start with the platform audit alone.

Is Google Search Console enough on its own?

No. Search Console is essential and free, but it only shows your own site’s data, averaged and sampled. It cannot show competitor keywords, track agreed keyword sets daily, or produce branded client reports. Paid SEO agency tools exist to cover exactly those gaps, not to duplicate what Google already gives you.

Do agencies really need white label reporting?

If you report to clients monthly, yes, in our view. White label reporting means the report carries your branding rather than the software vendor’s, which protects the client relationship and saves hours of manual assembly per client per month. In SE Ranking it comes via the Agency Pack add-on at £49/month on annual billing, as of July 2026.

Does SE Ranking offer a free trial?

Yes. As of July 2026, SE Ranking offers a 14-day free trial with no credit card required. Its own pricing FAQ describes the trial as fully functional with starter usage limits (up to 10 projects and 750 tracked keywords per day). The same page states you can cancel a paid plan at any time, with payments non-refundable except where the service was not delivered as promised.

Why does an SEO agency build sites on Astro instead of WordPress?

Because static HTML is fast, secure and cheap to run: there is no database to slow pages down and no plugin stack to patch. Astro itself is free and open source. WordPress remains a reasonable choice where clients need to edit content heavily themselves; we recommend per client rather than by default.
