Less Than a Third of Google Searches Still Send a Click: What Zero-Click Means for Your Business

Google search has quietly changed shape, and most UK business owners have not been told. SparkToro’s 2026 research shows that 68% of US Google searches now end without a click: only around 276 visits per 1,000 searches reach the open web, down from roughly 374 in 2024. The short version: search still works, people are still looking for what you sell, but fewer of them land on your site as a tidy, trackable click. The good news is that this is a measurement problem and a strategy problem, not a death sentence, and there is a calm, practical plan on the other side of it.

What zero-click actually means

A zero-click search is one where the person gets their answer on the results page itself and never visits a website. AI Overviews, featured snippets, knowledge panels, maps and the answer boxes now sit between your customer and your front door.

This is not Google being spiteful. It is Google keeping people on Google. The effect, though, is real: Ahrefs found that AI Overviews correlate with roughly a 58% lower click-through rate for the top ranking page. Being number one means less than it did, because the slot above number one is now an answer, not a link.

For a business, the mental shift is this. The job is no longer only “rank and get the click”. The job is to be present, trusted and quotable at the moment someone is deciding.

The instinct to panic is the wrong one

Plenty of agencies will use these numbers to frighten you into a contract. We would rather you saw them clearly.

Two things are true at once. First, raw click volume to the open web is falling. Second, the searches that do still produce a click are often higher intent, because the casual “what time does it close” lookups are being absorbed by the answer boxes, leaving the people who actually want to buy, book or enquire.

Google’s own May 2026 guidance is reassuring on this point: optimising for AI search is still SEO. Clear content, sound structure and genuine expertise still win, and there are no secret tricks to chase. If anyone offers you a magic “AI ranking” hack, keep your wallet shut.

Become the source the AI quotes

If the answer box is the new shop window, the aim is simple: be the business the AI pulls its answer from. That comes down to a few honest fundamentals.

  • Front-load your answers. Say the useful thing in the first sentence or two, then expand. Burying the point three paragraphs down helps nobody, least of all a machine scanning for a clean answer.
  • Structure content clearly. Sensible headings, short sections, proper lists and plain language. Easy for a person to read is easy for a model to cite.
  • Show real expertise. Thin, answer-only pages that just rephrase the obvious will lose. Pages written by people who genuinely know the subject, with detail a generalist could not fake, are exactly what gets quoted.

The uncomfortable truth and the opportunity sit together here. Generic content is now competing with the AI itself and losing. Real authority is worth more than ever, because it is the thing the AI cannot generate on its own.

Build demand, then own your audience

When you cannot rely on borrowed traffic, you build your own. Two priorities matter.

Brand and demand. People who search for you by name are not really doing a zero-click search, they already want you. Reviews, word of mouth, useful content and a recognisable presence all push more people to ask for you directly. For local businesses especially, a well-kept Google Business Profile and a steady flow of genuine reviews still drive real enquiries, AI Overview or not.

Owned channels. Every time someone gives you their email, you turn a one-off visit into a relationship you control. An email list, a newsletter, a customer community: none of it is at the mercy of an algorithm changing its mind on a Tuesday.

Measure visibility, not just clicks

If you only watch your click count, the next two years will read like a slow decline even when your business is doing fine. The honest fix is to broaden what you measure.

Alongside clicks, watch:

  • Impressions and visibility, including whether you appear in AI answers and featured results.
  • Branded search volume, your best proxy for whether demand is growing.
  • Enquiries, calls and bookings, the numbers that actually pay wages, rather than traffic for its own sake.

The aim is a picture of presence, not just a tally of visits. A business can be more visible than ever while its raw click chart drifts gently downwards, and that is a perfectly healthy place to be in 2026.

If any of this feels like a lot to weigh up, that is rather the point of having analysts in your corner. We are happy to look at where your business actually shows up today, AI answers included, and map out a sensible plan to stay in front of customers as search keeps shifting.
