If you are weighing up Ahrefs vs SpyFu vs Semrush, the honest answer is that all three are good at different jobs, and a fourth option (SE Ranking) undercuts them all on price for most agency work. We are Luckywebs, a London SEO and web agency, and in this guide we compare all four on verified July 2026 pricing and their genuine strengths, then give a straight verdict for each type of buyer.
Ahrefs vs SpyFu vs Semrush vs SE Ranking: what does each do best?
Comparing Ahrefs vs SpyFu vs Semrush vs SE Ranking comes down to four different specialisms: Ahrefs leads on backlink data, SpyFu leads on PPC competitor history at a low price, Semrush offers the broadest all-in-one suite, and SE Ranking offers the strongest price-to-feature ratio for agencies and small teams.
Here is the one-line version of each:
- Ahrefs built its reputation on its backlink index and is the tool most link builders reach for first.
- SpyFu specialises in competitor intelligence: what rivals rank for and, crucially, what they bid on in Google Ads, tracked over time.
- Semrush is the broadest platform, spanning SEO, PPC, content, social and AI visibility tracking.
- SE Ranking covers rank tracking, keyword research, backlinks and audits at a fraction of the big-tool prices, with agency features built in.
How do the four tools compare on price and features?
On price, SpyFu is the cheapest entry point (Basic from $29, about £21, per month billed annually), SE Ranking offers the most complete platform for the money, and Ahrefs and Semrush sit at the premium end. All pricing below was checked in July 2026 and is quoted in the currency each vendor displays.

What is Ahrefs best at?
Ahrefs is best at backlink analysis. A backlink index is a database of links between websites that a tool builds by crawling the web, and Ahrefs’ index is widely regarded as the strongest in the industry. If your work is link building, digital PR or competitor link gap analysis, Ahrefs is the benchmark the others get measured against.
The trade-off is cost. As of July 2026, Lite is $129 (about £95) per month, Standard is $249 (about £183) and Advanced is $449 (about £330) (USD, monthly billing), with annual billing working out at roughly two months free. Every plan includes one user, and additional seats are charged separately. The $29 (about £21) Starter plan, introduced in January 2026, lowers the entry price considerably, but it is deliberately limited: one project and a 100-credit monthly allowance, enough for light keyword research and occasional audits. There is no free trial.
What is SpyFu best at?
SpyFu is best at PPC competitor research on a small budget. PPC competitor research is the practice of analysing which keywords rivals bid on in Google Ads, what their adverts say and how that changes over time. SpyFu’s core pitch is exactly that history: type in a competitor’s domain and see what they have bid on and ranked for going back years.
It is also the cheapest tool here. As of July 2026, Basic costs $39 (about £29) per month, or $29 (about £21) per month billed annually, and includes 5,000 weekly tracked keywords. Pro + AI is $119 (about £87) per month ($89, about £65, annually) and Team is $249 (about £183) per month ($187, about £137, annually), all in USD, backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee. The weakness is depth outside competitor intelligence: its backlink data and technical auditing are thin compared with the other three, so most agencies pair it with something else rather than run it alone.
What is Semrush best at?
Semrush is best at breadth. No other platform here covers as much ground: keyword research, rank tracking, backlinks, technical audits, PPC research, content tools, local SEO and social media in one subscription. For an in-house team that wants one login for everything, that breadth is the whole argument.
The pricing reflects it. Semrush has restructured its plans: as of July 2026 the lineup is SEO at $139 (about £102) per month, Starter at $199 (about £146), Pro+ at $299 (about £220) and Advanced at $549 (about £403) (USD, monthly billing), dropping to $117.33 (about £86), $165.17 (about £121), $248.17 (about £182) and $455.67 (about £335) on annual billing, with extra seats from $45 (about £33) per month. Starter, Pro+ and Advanced include AI visibility tracking (50, 100 and 200 tracked prompts daily), which follows how brands appear in ChatGPT and Google’s AI results. Semrush is mid-transition, so plenty of third-party roundups still quote the older Pro ($139.95), Guru ($249.95) and Business ($499.95) plans, which no longer appear on Semrush’s own pricing page. There is a 7-day free trial. We dig into the platform module by module in our full Semrush review.
What is SE Ranking best at?
SE Ranking is best at price-to-feature ratio, which is why it is the default recommendation we make to most small agencies and in-house teams. It covers the core agency workload (daily rank tracking, keyword research, backlink checking, site audits and reporting) at well under half the cost of a comparable Semrush or Ahrefs tier.
As of July 2026, on SE Ranking’s UK pricing page, Core costs £95 per month, or £76 per month billed annually, and includes 10 projects, 2,000 daily tracked keywords and a 250,000 page per month audit allowance. Growth is £209 per month (£167.20 annually) with 30 projects, 5,000 keywords and 3 seats. The Agency Pack add-on (£49 per month, annual plans) adds white-label reporting and client portals. Every plan comes with a fully functional 14-day free trial, no card required.
At Luckywebs we build and optimise sites for clients in home improvement trades, law and e-commerce, and for that kind of multi-client tracking workload the value case is hard to argue with.
SpyFu vs Semrush: which should you pick for competitor research?
In a straight SpyFu vs Semrush comparison, SpyFu wins on price and PPC history, while Semrush wins on everything else. If your only job is watching a competitor’s Google Ads activity, SpyFu does that for $39 (about £29) per month, while Semrush’s equivalent research sits inside a platform starting at $139 (about £102) per month (both prices as of July 2026).
Most Semrush vs SpyFu debates end the same way: SpyFu for a PPC-led shop or a freelancer who needs competitor intelligence cheaply, Semrush for a team that needs competitor data plus rank tracking, audits and content tools in the same place. If you want the middle ground (proper SEO platform, sensible price), that is where SE Ranking comes in.
What about Moz in the Ahrefs vs Semrush vs Moz debate?
Moz still comes up in every Ahrefs vs Semrush vs Moz comparison because it is the oldest brand of the three, and metrics like Domain Authority remain widely quoted. As a working platform in 2026, though, it is the conservative choice: a solid, friendly toolset that no longer leads any single category.
As of July 2026, Moz Pro pricing runs from Starter at $49 (about £36) per month up to Large at $299 (about £220) per month (USD, monthly billing), with roughly 20% off on annual plans and a 7-day free trial. It is a reasonable pick for beginners who value a gentle learning curve, but for backlinks you would still choose Ahrefs, for breadth Semrush, and for value SE Ranking.
Which tool should you choose for your situation?
Choose based on the job you actually do, not the biggest feature list. Ahrefs suits link builders, SpyFu suits PPC-led buyers on a budget, Semrush suits large in-house teams, and SE Ranking suits agencies and small teams who want the full core toolkit without the premium price. All prices below are as of July 2026, and our SEO tools hub gathers all our reviews and comparisons in one place.
- Freelancer on a tight budget: SpyFu Basic ($29/mo, about £21, annual) for competitor work, or Ahrefs Starter ($29/mo, about £21) if backlinks matter more and you can live with tight credit limits.
- Small agency with multiple clients: SE Ranking Core or Growth, plus the Agency Pack for white-label reporting.
- Link building or digital PR specialist: Ahrefs, and budget for Standard rather than Lite if you live in Site Explorer.
- In-house team at a larger company: Semrush Pro+ or Advanced, both of which include daily AI prompt tracking if AI search matters to your brand.
- PPC-led agency: SpyFu for ad intelligence, paired with SE Ranking for the SEO side.
FAQ: quick answers before you choose
Is SpyFu cheaper than Semrush?
Yes, by a wide margin. As of July 2026, SpyFu Basic costs $39 (about £29) per month ($29, about £21, annually) against Semrush’s entry SEO plan at $139 (about £102) per month ($117.33, about £86, annually), both in USD. The gap reflects scope: Semrush is a full marketing platform, SpyFu is a focused competitor research tool.
Is SE Ranking a genuine alternative to Semrush or Ahrefs?
For most agency and small-business work, yes. SE Ranking covers rank tracking, keyword research, backlink analysis and site audits at a much lower price. Semrush still wins on sheer breadth and Ahrefs on backlink depth, so specialists at the top end may still need one of the big two.
Does Ahrefs have a free trial?
No. As of July 2026 Ahrefs offers no free trial. The low-cost routes in are the $29 (about £21) per month Starter plan and the free Ahrefs Webmaster Tools for sites you own. SE Ranking (14 days) and Semrush (7 days) both offer proper free trials, and SpyFu offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Which tool is best for PPC competitor research?
SpyFu, for the money. Its ad history reports show what competitors have bid on over time, and the whole product is built around that question. Semrush’s advertising research is also very strong and better integrated with SEO data, but it costs several times more.
Can I switch tools without losing my data?
Mostly, yes. All four tools let you export keyword and ranking data to CSV, so archive your reports before cancelling. Rank tracking history generally starts fresh in the new tool from the day you add your keywords, so plan the switch at a natural reporting break.
Which tool does Luckywebs recommend for a small UK agency?
SE Ranking, in most cases. The Core plan’s 10 projects and 2,000 daily tracked keywords fit a typical small client roster, GBP billing avoids currency wobble on USD subscriptions, and the trial is long enough to test it on real client campaigns before paying anything.
