Last updated: 8 July 2026

Changelog: 11 July 2026: prices, plan limits, trial terms and module names re-verified against semrush.com; Semrush Local plan names and My Reports pricing corrected. 8 July 2026: first published.

Is Semrush worth it? For a small business, only if you will genuinely use its research depth: keyword data, competitor analysis and backlink intelligence at a scale no cheaper tool matches. For a single-site local business that mainly needs rank tracking and a monthly report, it is more tool than the job requires, and SE Ranking or a focused tracker costs far less. Semrush earns its price when SEO is central to how you grow, when you study competitors most weeks, or when you sell SEO as a service. We are Luckywebs, a UK SEO and web agency based in London, and this review judges the platform against real client jobs, on pricing verified against semrush.com in July 2026.

Semrush review verdict: should you buy it?

Semrush is the most complete SEO and market research platform on the market, and the price matches. It is the right buy for agencies, in-house marketing teams and content-led businesses that use research daily. It is the wrong buy for a small business that only needs to know where it ranks, because most of what you pay for would sit unused.

Best for: agencies, in-house SEO teams, and content or digital PR businesses that research keywords, competitors and backlinks most weeks.

Not for: single-location small businesses that mainly want rank tracking and a monthly report, and anyone whose budget rules out a three-figure monthly USD subscription.

Price: the current SEO plan starts at $139 (about £102) per month ($117.33, about £86, per month on annual billing), rising to Advanced at $549 (about £403) per month ($455.67, about £335, annual), in USD as shown on semrush.com in July 2026.

Trial: 7 days free on current plans, credit card required, auto-converts to a paid subscription unless you cancel before it ends (as of July 2026). Stale roundups still quote a 14-day trial; that is out of date.

What is Semrush and who is it for?

Semrush is a subscription SEO and digital marketing platform that bundles keyword research, rank tracking, technical site audits, competitor and traffic analysis, backlink tools, local SEO, content optimisation and AI search visibility into one interface. It is closer to a full marketing suite than a single-purpose SEO tool, which is both its strength and the reason it can feel oversized for a small business.

The natural buyers are agencies running many client sites, in-house teams at brands that compete on search, and content or PR businesses that live inside keyword and link data. For those users the breadth is the point: one login replaces three or four narrower subscriptions. For a plumber or a single clinic that only wants rankings and a tidy report, that breadth is mostly cost with little return.

Is Semrush worth it for a small business?

For most small businesses, Semrush is worth it only if SEO is a core growth channel rather than a box to tick. If you publish content regularly, chase competitive keywords or manage links, the research depth pays back the subscription. If you run one location and want rankings plus a monthly summary, the honest answer is that Semrush is more than you need.

The maths tells the story. The entry SEO plan is $139 (about £102) per month in USD (as of July 2026), so the sterling cost moves with the exchange rate, with VAT potentially on top, a meaningful fixed cost for a small firm. A focused tracker or a mid-market platform such as SE Ranking covers rank tracking, audits and reporting for less. We set out the head-to-head in our SE Ranking vs Semrush comparison, and our guide to Semrush alternatives covers the cheaper field.

How much does Semrush cost in July 2026?

Semrush restructured its plans around a unified lineup that folds AI search visibility into the core tiers. As of July 2026, semrush.com listed four self-serve plans plus a free tier, all priced in USD. UK buyers see the same USD figures, so treat the numbers below as list prices, not a final invoice: the sterling cost follows the exchange rate, and check whether VAT applies to you. Semrush now lists sterling prices to UK visitors too, set out in our Semrush UK pricing breakdown.

PlanMonthly (USD)Annual per month (USD)SitesKeywords trackedAI prompts per dayNotable
SEO$139 (about £102)$117.33 (about £86)5500Basic AI visibilityEntry SEO toolkit
Starter$199 (about £146)$165.17 (about £121)550050MCP access for AI connectors
Pro+$299 (about £220)$248.17 (about £182)151,500100Historical data, content optimisation
Advanced$549 (about £403)$455.67 (about £335)405,000200Share of voice, API data integration

Extra user seats start at $45 (about £33) per month. There is a free plan ($0, one demo project, ten reports a day, AI visibility features) for trying the interface. One caution: the legacy Pro ($139.95), Guru ($249.95) and Business ($499.95) plans are retired from open sale but still quoted by out-of-date roundups, and standard API access historically routed through that legacy Business tier per Semrush developer docs. For the full breakdown, see our Semrush pricing guide.

How do Semrush’s tools score, module by module?

Semrush is a suite of modules, and they are not all equally strong. The scores below are our editorial judgement as a working agency, not a benchmark test, weighing each tool on data depth, everyday usefulness and value for the price. We rate the research and backlink tools highest and the local and AI modules as capable but still maturing.

ModuleScore (out of 10)One-line verdict
Keyword Magic Tool9Vast database, best breadth for keyword research
Backlink tools9One of the largest claimed link indexes
Site Audit8Thorough technical crawl, can overwhelm beginners
Position Tracking8Reliable daily rankings, keyword caps bite
Traffic Analytics8Strong competitor estimates, still estimates
Local Toolkit7Capable, but per-location pricing stacks up
AI Visibility Toolkit7Useful now, early and prompt-capped

The sections that follow take each module in turn, with the honest limit named alongside the strength. Where a claim needs first-hand evidence we have not yet published, we mark an evidence slot rather than invent a result.

How good is the Keyword Magic Tool?

The Keyword Magic Tool is Semrush’s strongest module and, for many buyers, the reason to subscribe. It expands a single seed term into thousands of related keywords, grouped into topic clusters, with filters for search volume, keyword difficulty, search intent and SERP features. The underlying database is one of the largest available, which means fewer blind spots when you size a market or build a content plan.

In agency practice this is where a content brief begins: find the head term, read the clusters, and separate the questions a page must answer from the terms that belong elsewhere. The limit is discipline, not data. The volume of suggestions can bury a small business owner who needed twenty keywords, and the difficulty score is a model, not a promise, so it guides prioritisation rather than guaranteeing outcomes. Treat it as a research surface you filter hard, and it is excellent.

What does Semrush Site Audit catch?

Semrush Site Audit crawls a website against more than 140 technical checks, covering crawlability and indexation, HTTPS and security, internal linking, Core Web Vitals, structured data, hreflang, redirects, broken links and duplicate content. It renders JavaScript on the higher tiers, returns a site health score, and groups issues by severity so you can work top-down from errors to notices.

For our work the audit earns its place on inherited sites rather than new builds. Our own client sites are static Astro builds that give a crawler little to flag, but a new retainer often arrives as a WordPress install carrying plugin bloat, stray URL parameters and years of legacy redirects, and a categorised, prioritised issue list is exactly what you want on day one. The limit is signal-to-noise: the tool surfaces a long list, and a beginner can mistake low-priority notices for emergencies. It reports problems well; deciding which ones move rankings is still a human job.

Is Position Tracking accurate enough for client reports?

Semrush Position Tracking is reliable enough for client reporting, with the usual caveat that any third-party tracker is a sample, not the source of truth. Our Position Tracking setup guide walks through the settings that decide whether those numbers are trustworthy. It records daily positions by keyword, splits desktop from mobile, targets locations down to city or postcode level, and flags SERP features such as AI Overviews and featured snippets alongside your rankings. The visibility trend and share of voice views translate cleanly into a monthly client update.

The real constraint is the keyword allowance. The SEO and Starter plans track 500 keywords, Pro+ tracks 1,500 and Advanced tracks 5,000 (as of July 2026). For an agency running several retainers at 100 to 200 keywords each, those caps arrive faster than expected, and tracked keywords are a main lever pushing you up a tier. Our standing advice is to reconcile tracked positions against Google Search Console over a trial before trusting them. For the method, see our guide on how to track keyword rankings.

What is Traffic Analytics good for?

Traffic Analytics is Semrush’s competitor intelligence module, and it is strong for sizing up rivals you have no direct data on. It estimates any domain’s visits, traffic sources, audience overlap, top pages and engagement, drawing on clickstream and modelled data. Sat inside the wider market analysis toolkit, it is the fastest way to answer “how big is this competitor and where does their traffic come from” before a pitch or a strategy.

The word that matters is estimate. Traffic Analytics models third-party traffic; it does not read a competitor’s analytics, so treat the numbers as direction and relative scale, not precise counts. For your own sites, Search Console and GA4 remain the truth. Used well, it is superb for market sizing and finding where a rival earns its visibility; used carelessly, it invites false precision. Pair it with our approach to SEO competitor analysis so the estimates feed a plan.

For most buyers, yes. Semrush’s backlink tools sit on one of the largest link indexes in the industry, with a vendor-claimed figure in the region of 43 trillion links (Semrush’s own number, mid-2026). Backlink Analytics, the Backlink Audit and the Link Building Tool cover the everyday jobs: seeing who links to a competitor, auditing a toxic profile, finding link gaps and running outreach. For agencies that do link work as one service among several, that depth is more than enough.

Where the comparison gets closer is for backlink specialists. Ahrefs has long been the reference index for link-led teams, and some prefer its interface and freshness for forensic analysis. Our read: Semrush’s index is competitive on claimed scale and better integrated with a full suite, while a dedicated link tool may still edge it for a pure digital PR shop. If backlinks are the whole product, trial both; if they are one workflow of many, Semrush covers it well.

How does the Semrush Local Toolkit work?

The Semrush Local Toolkit handles the three jobs local search runs on: listings management, a Map Rank Tracker for grid-based visibility, and Google Business Profile tools, now including a GBP AI Agent for review and post support. It is priced separately from the core plans and per location: the Base plan was $30 (about £22) per month per location and Pro was $60 (about £44), as of July 2026 per Semrush’s own pricing help pages. That structure is fair for a single business and expensive for an agency managing many locations.

The Map Rank Tracker is the standout, because it measures rankings at multiple points across an area rather than one central coordinate, which is how you catch the drop-off two postcodes from a client’s door. The limit is the pricing model: a multi-location client or a portfolio of local businesses turns per-location fees into a serious line item, and a dedicated local platform can then undercut it. Cost the locations you actually manage before committing.

Does Semrush track AI search visibility?

Yes. Semrush’s AI Visibility Toolkit tracks how often a brand appears in AI-generated answers across ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, with competitor comparisons and prompt-based monitoring. It does not track Microsoft Copilot, and Grok and Claude coverage sits in the Enterprise AIO tier only. It is folded into the core lineup as daily AI prompt allowances: the SEO plan carries basic AI visibility, Starter adds 50 prompts a day, Pro+ 100 and Advanced 200 (as of July 2026). The bundled Semrush One packages the SEO Toolkit and AI Visibility Toolkit together, and Enterprise AIO extends this to larger organisations.

Definition first: generative engine optimisation (GEO) is the practice of improving how often and how favourably AI assistants cite your brand. Clients now ask about it by name, and having AI mention data beside rank data keeps the conversation grounded. The caveat: the space is young, the metrics are still settling, and prompt caps make heavy tracking a real cost. For our take on measuring it, see GEO rank tracking.

Who should not buy Semrush?

Some buyers should not buy Semrush, and we would say so before taking a subscription. Naming them plainly saves wasted budget:

  • Single-location small businesses whose real need is rank tracking plus a monthly report. You would use a fraction of the platform and pay for all of it. A focused tracker or SE Ranking fits better.
  • Budget-constrained freelancers for whom a three-figure monthly USD bill is a stretch. The value only lands if you are inside the tool most days.
  • Pure backlink or digital PR specialists who want the deepest, freshest link index above all else. Trial Semrush against a dedicated link tool before deciding.
  • Anyone who wants white label reporting built in. Semrush retired its Agency Growth Kit bundle; branded client reporting now runs through My Reports, sold as report add-ons at $10 (about £7) and $20 (about £15) per month on the July 2026 pricing page, which suits some agencies less than a flat fee elsewhere.
  • Enterprises needing custom data pipelines beyond the standard API tiers, who should scope Enterprise or the API tier directly.

If two or more of these describe you, weigh the Semrush alternatives before you commit.

What are Semrush’s pros and cons?

Weighed as a whole, Semrush’s strengths are depth and breadth, and its weaknesses are price and complexity. Here is the balance sheet for a UK buyer, based on the verified July 2026 plans and features above.

Pros

  • The largest, most complete research dataset of the mainstream SEO platforms, from keywords to backlinks to traffic estimates.
  • One subscription replaces several narrower tools, which is efficient for agencies and in-house teams.
  • Current on AI search, with AI visibility folded into the core plans rather than bolted on.
  • Deep competitor and advertising intelligence with no real equal at this scale.

Cons

  • Priced in USD at a three-figure monthly rate, which is a heavy fixed cost for a small business, before any VAT.
  • Keyword and project caps push you up tiers faster than the headline price suggests.
  • The interface is broad and can overwhelm a beginner who wanted a simple answer.
  • White label reporting and some agency essentials sit outside the base plans or in separate products.
  • The 7-day trial (not the 14 days some old articles claim) is short for a full evaluation.

Which Semrush plan fits which business?

The right Semrush plan follows from how you work, not from the feature list. Below are the verdicts we would give five common buyers, using the verified July 2026 lineup.

Solo consultant or freelancer. Start on the SEO plan ($139, about £102, per month, $117.33, about £86, annual) if SEO is your day job, or reconsider Semrush entirely if it is occasional; the value only lands with daily use.

Small business owner. Usually the wrong tool. The SEO plan covers five sites and 500 keywords, but a focused tracker or SE Ranking will serve a single-location firm for less. See our SE Ranking review.

Small agency on retainers. Pro+ ($299, about £220, per month, $248.17, about £182, annual) for 15 sites, 1,500 tracked keywords and historical data, with extra seats at $45 (about £33) each. Budget reporting separately.

Content or digital PR team. Pro+ or Advanced, for the keyword database, content optimisation and backlink depth that link-led and content-led work runs on.

In-house team at a competitive brand. Advanced ($549, about £403, per month, $455.67, about £335, annual) for 40 sites, 5,000 keywords, share of voice and API data integration into your own reporting.

How does Semrush compare to the alternatives?

Semrush is the broadest platform, but broad is not automatically right. Against SE Ranking, Semrush wins on database scale, competitor intelligence and AI breadth, while SE Ranking wins on entry price, included seats and flat-fee white label reporting. The two suit different businesses, and we work through the numbers in our SE Ranking vs Semrush comparison.

If price is the deciding factor, the wider market matters. Our Semrush alternatives guide compares nine tools on verified pricing, and if reporting is where your agency lives or dies, our roundup of the best SEO reporting tools covers the platforms that turn tool data into a client-ready report. Start from the job you invoice for, then pick the tool that covers it with the least waste. Everything on our SEO tools hub is organised that way, tool by job rather than tool by brand.

How do we assess SEO tools at Luckywebs?

Luckywebs is a UK SEO and web agency based in London, and we hold every tool we recommend to the same tests we apply before anything touches a client retainer. Our founder Mo Rafi brings 15 years of front-end development to his technical SEO work; Katy Mironenko leads SEO delivery as Head of SEO, and Robert Malnieks runs client strategy. We build client sites on Astro as fast static HTML, and we hold a 4.7-star Google rating from 60 reviews.

Our tests are simple and consistent. Data must reconcile with Google Search Console, not just look plausible. A tool must remove steps from work we already do, not add dashboards nobody opens. Reports must make sense to a business owner. And every figure in a review like this is verified against the vendor’s own pages and dated. That discipline sits behind real client outcomes, including Circa London at plus 40% enquiries and RakLAW at plus 60% leads. Tools support that work; they do not replace the judgement behind it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Semrush worth the money in 2026?

Semrush is worth the money if SEO is a core growth channel and you use research most weeks. For agencies, in-house teams and content or PR businesses, the depth pays back the subscription. For a single-location small business that mainly needs rank tracking and a report, it is more tool than the job requires, and a cheaper platform serves you better.

How much does Semrush cost per month?

As of July 2026, semrush.com listed the SEO plan at $139 (about £102) per month ($117.33, about £86, annual), Starter at $199 (about £146) ($165.17, about £121), Pro+ at $299 (about £220) ($248.17, about £182) and Advanced at $549 (about £403) ($455.67, about £335), all in USD, with extra seats from $45 (about £33) per month. For UK buyers the sterling cost follows the exchange rate, so check whether VAT applies before treating these as your final cost.

Does Semrush have a free trial?

Yes, a 7-day free trial on its current plans as of July 2026. A credit card is required, and the trial auto-converts to a paid subscription unless you cancel before it ends. Older articles quoting a 14-day trial are out of date. Our Semrush free trial guide covers what is included and how to cancel.

Is Semrush good for small business?

It can be, if SEO is central to growth and someone will use the tool regularly. For a small firm that publishes content and chases competitive keywords, the research depth helps. For a single-location business that only wants rankings, Semrush is usually more than you need, and a focused tracker or SE Ranking costs far less.

What are the main Semrush pros and cons?

The main pro is depth: the most complete research dataset of the mainstream platforms, spanning keywords, backlinks, traffic estimates and AI visibility in one subscription. The main con is cost and complexity: a three-figure monthly USD price, keyword caps that push you up tiers, and an interface broad enough to overwhelm a beginner.

Can Semrush track AI search and ChatGPT visibility?

Yes. The AI Visibility Toolkit tracks brand mentions across ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, with competitor comparisons (it does not track Microsoft Copilot). It is included as daily AI prompt allowances that scale with your plan (as of July 2026), and Enterprise AIO extends it for larger organisations. The metrics are still maturing, so treat the data as direction of travel.

Is Semrush better than SE Ranking?

Neither is universally better; they suit different businesses. Semrush wins on database scale, competitor intelligence and AI breadth. SE Ranking wins on entry price, included seats and flat-fee white label reporting. Read our SE Ranking vs Semrush comparison for the worked numbers, then trial the one that matches how you work.

Who are Luckywebs and why trust this review?

Luckywebs is a UK SEO and web agency based in London founded by Mo Rafi, with Katy Mironenko as Head of SEO and Robert Malnieks as Client Strategy Director. We run SEO for clients in the trades, law and e-commerce, build sites on Astro, and hold a 4.7-star Google rating from 60 reviews.
