Somewhere today, an AI assistant answered a buying question in your market and either recommended you, recommended a competitor, or got the facts wrong. Traditional analytics will not tell you which. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews now answer a growing share of research questions in full, with no click required, so the recommendation happens entirely off your site.
An AI visibility tracker closes that blind spot. It shows you which prompts trigger your brand, which platforms mention you, whether those mentions come with citations or links, and how you compare with competitors over time. In this guide we cover what GEO rank tracking is, what to measure, a manual workflow you can start this week for free, and the paid tools worth considering once manual checks stop scaling.
What Is GEO Rank Tracking?
GEO rank tracking is the practice of monitoring how often, and how favourably, AI search platforms mention, cite or link to a brand in their generated answers. Where a traditional rank tracker records a fixed position for a keyword, a GEO rank tracker records a share of appearances across repeated AI answers to a panel of prompts.
GEO (generative engine optimisation) is the discipline of improving how generative AI systems represent and recommend a brand. Rank tracking is its measurement layer: without it, you are optimising blind.
The key mental shift is that there is no position one in an AI answer. The same prompt can produce different answers on different runs, for different users, on different days. GEO rank tracking therefore works on probabilities rather than positions: run a fixed set of prompts on a schedule, then measure how often your brand appears, in what role, and alongside which competitors.
Why Do AI Answers Need Monitoring?
AI answers need monitoring because they resolve buying questions without a click, which means your brand can win or lose a customer inside an answer you never see. If an assistant recommends three competitors for “best accountant in Cambridge” and leaves you out, no analytics platform, search console or classic rank tracker will flag it.
This is the zero-click problem in its sharpest form. With a classic search result you might lose the click but keep the visibility; with an AI answer you can lose both silently. AI brand visibility tracking exists to put numbers on that silence: which prompts you appear in, which you are absent from, and whether the trend is moving your way.
Not every appearance is equal, so separate three signals. A brand mention is your name in the answer text. A citation is your page shown as a source behind the answer. A link is a clickable URL that can actually send traffic. Each tells you something different about how the model treats you.
| Signal | What it is | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Brand mention | Your brand named in the body of the AI answer | The model associates you with the topic; builds awareness even at zero clicks |
| Citation | Your page displayed as a source used for the answer | The model retrieved and trusted your content when composing the answer |
| Link | A clickable URL to your site inside the answer | The only signal that can produce measurable referral traffic |
What Should You Track in AI Search?
In AI search you should track four things: a fixed panel of prompts that mirror real buyer questions, the platforms those buyers use, whether each answer mentions, cites or links to your brand, and which competitors appear beside you. Tracked on a schedule, these turn scattered anecdotes into an AI visibility trend you can act on.
Start with prompts, not keywords. Pull 20 to 50 questions from sales calls, support emails and your keyword data, weighted towards commercial intent: “best [service] for [audience]”, “[brand] vs [competitor]”, “is [brand] worth it”, “[service] near me”. Include a few branded prompts too, because how an assistant describes you matters as much as whether it names you.
Then decide where to run them. These are the platforms most worth a slot in an AI visibility tracking panel right now:
| Platform | Why it belongs in your panel |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT | The largest assistant audience; the default research companion for many buyers |
| Google AI Overviews | AI answers placed above the classic results on Google itself |
| Google AI Mode | Google’s conversational search experience for multi-step questions |
| Perplexity | Citation-first answers; every response lists its sources |
| Gemini | Google’s assistant, increasingly built into Android and Workspace |
For each prompt and platform, score the outcome (mentioned, cited, linked or absent), note the competitors named, and keep the answer wording. Mention rate, citation rate and share of voice against competitors are the headline metrics; the wording tells you whether the model is describing you accurately.
How Do You Track AI Visibility Without Paying for a Tool?
You can run AI visibility tracking for free with a fixed prompt panel, a repeatable monthly routine and a spreadsheet. The results are rougher than tool data because AI answers vary between runs, but a manual panel is the fastest way to find out whether you have an AI visibility problem before spending anything. When it is time to pay for one, we compared the options in AI visibility tools.
- Build the prompt panel. Write 20 to 30 prompts using the sources above. Freeze the wording; changing prompts mid-stream breaks your trend line.
- Run the panel on a fixed day each month. Ask each prompt in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini in a fresh chat, and search the matching queries on Google to capture AI Overviews and AI Mode.
- Score every answer. One row per prompt per platform: mentioned, cited, linked or absent, plus each competitor named.
- Keep the evidence. Paste the answer text or a screenshot into the sheet so you can check framing and accuracy later.
- Trend the mention rate. Prompts where you appear, divided by total prompts, per platform, per month.
Run each prompt two or three times where time allows. A single run is a coin flip, not a measurement, and averaging repeat runs smooths out the randomness in generated answers.
This spreadsheet is, in effect, a free ChatGPT mention tracker. Its weaknesses are precisely why paid tools exist: it samples each prompt once or twice a month rather than daily, it consumes hours of someone’s time, and it cannot reconstruct historic answers once the models move on.
Which AI Visibility Tracker Should You Use?
The right AI visibility tracker for most small and mid-sized teams is one that sits beside existing rank tracking rather than replacing it. That is why SE Ranking’s AI Search add-on is our first recommendation, with Profound and Peec AI as credible alternatives for bigger budgets or broader engine coverage. Everything below was checked against the vendors’ own pages in July 2026.
| Tool | AI platforms tracked | Pricing (as of July 2026) | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| SE Ranking AI Search add-on | ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity | £69/mo, or £55.20/mo billed annually, added to a base plan (Core £95/mo, Growth £209/mo billed monthly) | Teams that want classic SEO and GEO reporting in one platform |
| Profound | ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews on standard tiers; up to 10 engines on Enterprise, including Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Meta AI, Grok, DeepSeek and Claude | Starter $99/mo (about £73) (ChatGPT only, 50 prompts); Growth $399/mo (about £293) (3 engines, 100 prompts); Enterprise custom; both fixed tiers billed yearly | Larger brands that need the widest engine coverage |
| Peec AI | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode | Four tiers (Starter, Pro, Advanced, Enterprise); prices not displayed on its public pricing page | Agencies running multi-country prompt panels |
Most AI visibility tools price by prompts tracked or engines covered, so a tight, well-chosen prompt panel keeps costs down whichever platform you pick. Semrush now bundles AI visibility tracking into its own plans too; our full Semrush review covers how that side of the platform works.
SE Ranking’s AI visibility toolkit tracks brand mentions and links triggered by your prompts across all five platforms above, compares your visibility side by side with up to five competitors, shows which domains AI answers cite most, and keeps cached copies of the answers so you can read exactly how each model framed you. The 14-day free trial needs no credit card and is enough to pilot a small panel properly, and there is a free standalone visibility checker limited to five checks per day (all as of July 2026).
If you only need one engine, Profound’s Starter tier has the lowest published entry price of the three for ChatGPT-only coverage (billed yearly), though 50 prompts fills up quickly once you add branded and competitor questions. Peec AI is aimed squarely at agencies, with tiers built around projects and countries per project, but you will need to request current pricing since it is not published.
How Do We Approach GEO Rank Tracking at Luckywebs?
At Luckywebs we treat GEO rank tracking as a monthly companion to classic rank tracking, never a replacement. Our approach is the workflow in this guide: a prompt panel built from real buyer questions and keyword data, mentions and citations scored across the major platforms, and the trend reported beside organic positions so a single AI answer is never mistaken for a verdict.
The fixes that follow are usually familiar territory: pages that answer questions directly, clear company and service information, and a site AI crawlers can actually read. It is one reason we build client sites on Astro as fast static HTML; assistants and their crawlers handle plain HTML far more reliably than JavaScript-heavy templates. When a citation gap appears, the page gets rewritten to be quotable: definition first, specifics next, padding gone. Our guide on optimising for AI Overviews walks through that rewriting process step by step.
Frequently Asked Questions About GEO Rank Tracking
What is an AI visibility tracker?
An AI visibility tracker is a tool that runs a fixed set of prompts through AI search platforms on a schedule and records whether a brand is mentioned, cited or linked in each answer. It replaces one-off manual spot checks with trend data you can compare month to month and measure against competitors.
Is there a free way to do ChatGPT rank tracking?
Yes, within limits. Free ChatGPT rank tracking means running a fixed prompt panel yourself in fresh chats and logging mentions in a spreadsheet, as described above. SE Ranking’s 14-day trial adds a more structured option at no cost with no card details, plus a free visibility checker capped at five checks per day (as of July 2026).
What is the difference between a mention, a citation and a link?
A mention is your brand named in the answer text, a citation is your page listed as a source the answer drew on, and a link is a clickable URL inside the answer. Mentions build awareness, citations show the model trusts your content, and links are the only one that can send measurable traffic.
How many prompts should we track?
Between 20 and 50 prompts is enough for most businesses. Fewer than 20 and one odd answer distorts your trend; beyond 50 the panel gets expensive to run and slow to review. Weight the panel towards commercial questions and comparisons, and freeze the wording so results stay comparable month to month.
Why do AI answers change between runs?
Generative models produce answers probabilistically, so the same prompt can surface different brands on different runs. Retrieval sources, model versions and user context shift as well. This is why GEO rank tracking measures share of appearances over repeated runs rather than a single position, and why one-off checks prove very little.
Does traditional rank tracking still matter?
Yes. AI answers lean heavily on pages that already perform well in classic search, and organic listings remain the search channel where clicks can actually be measured and attributed. Treat a GEO rank tracker as a second scoreboard alongside your existing one, not a successor to it.
AI answers are already shaping who gets shortlisted in your market. A manual prompt panel this month gives you a baseline; a proper tracker keeps the trend honest from then on.
