AI Visibility Tools Compared: What Is Worth Paying For

For most UK small businesses, the AI visibility tools worth paying for are the AI tracking features already inside a general SEO platform, not a dedicated enterprise AI monitor. As of July 2026, SE Ranking includes trackers for AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity on its ordinary self-serve plans (Core costs £95 a month, or £76 a month billed annually), and Semrush sells its AI Toolkit standalone at $99 (about £73) a month. Both record brand mentions, citations and share of voice in AI answers without an enterprise contract. Below we compare the two we have tested ourselves, plus the free manual baseline to run first.

Why AI visibility now matters

A growing share of buying research now ends inside an AI answer rather than on a results page. AI Overviews sit above the classic listings on Google itself, ChatGPT is the default research companion for many buyers, and Perplexity answers with sources attached, so the shortlist is often decided before anyone clicks anything. That is the sharp end of zero-click search: with an AI answer you can lose the click and the visibility at once, silently.

No analytics platform will tell you that an assistant recommended three competitors for “best accountant in Cambridge” and left you out. AI visibility tools put numbers on that silence. They will not fix the gap (that is content and technical work, covered in our guide to optimising for AI Overviews), but they show where the gaps are and whether your fixes are moving anything.

What AI visibility tools actually track

Strip away the dashboards and every credible tool does the same three jobs. First, prompt sampling: you define a panel of prompts mirroring real buyer questions, and the tool runs them against the AI platforms on a schedule, usually daily. Second, scoring: whether your brand was mentioned, cited as a source, or linked, and which competitors appeared beside you. Third, trending: mention rate, citation rate and share of voice, tracked over weeks so one odd answer never gets mistaken for a verdict.

There is no position one in an AI answer; the same prompt can surface different brands on different runs, so these tools measure share of appearances rather than a fixed rank. Our GEO rank tracking guide explains the methodology in full, including how to build a prompt panel worth tracking: 20 to 50 prompts weighted towards commercial intent, wording frozen so the trend line stays honest.

SE Ranking: AI tracking inside an ordinary SEO plan

SE Ranking is the option we recommend first for most UK small businesses, because the AI trackers come as part of the same self-serve platform that handles ordinary rank tracking, audits and keyword research. As of July 2026 its AI toolkit covers Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, included on ordinary self-serve plans: Core costs £95 a month, or £76 a month billed annually.

In use, it tracks the brand mentions and links your prompts trigger across those five platforms, compares your visibility with up to five competitors, shows which domains the AI answers cite most, and keeps cached copies of the answers so you can read exactly how each model framed you. That last feature matters: the wording tells you whether the model is describing you accurately, not just whether it knows you exist. There is a 14-day free trial with no card required, plus a free standalone visibility checker limited to five checks per day, all as of July 2026. Our full SE Ranking review covers the rest of the platform.

Semrush: the AI Toolkit

Semrush approaches the same problem from a bigger platform. Its AI Toolkit tracks brand mentions, sentiment, share of voice and cited sources across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, and adds Prompt Research data showing estimated volume and difficulty for the questions people ask assistants, which most rivals lack.

The pricing needs reading carefully. As of July 2026 the toolkit costs $99 (about £73) a month standalone (billed annually) for one domain with 25 tracked prompts, and the entry $139 (about £102) a month SEO plan does not include prompt tracking at all. To get the classic SEO toolkit and AI tracking together you need a Semrush One plan, from $199 (about £146) a month, or $165.17 (about £121) billed annually, for 50 daily prompts across 5 websites. Our Semrush AI Toolkit guide walks through every report and who genuinely needs it.

The zero-budget baseline: check by hand first

Before paying for anything, run the manual version. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI answers the 8 to 12 questions a real customer would ask to find a business like yours, in fresh chats, and log whether you are mentioned, how you are described, and which competitors appear instead. Repeat monthly on a fixed day and you have a working AI visibility tracker for half an hour’s effort. Our guide to checking whether ChatGPT recommends your business gives you the full protocol and prompt templates.

The manual check tells you whether you have a problem worth measuring. If your brand shows up consistently and analytics show no AI referrals yet, keep the money and re-check monthly. If you are absent while competitors get named, daily automated tracking starts earning its fee, because you will want to know quickly whether your fixes (answer-shaped content, consistent business information, a site AI crawlers can read, perhaps an llms.txt file) are changing the answers.

What about dedicated enterprise AI monitoring platforms?

Above the SEO suites sits a growing category of dedicated AI search monitoring tools, built only for tracking brands in AI answers, with wider engine coverage and enterprise reporting. Profound and Peec AI are the names that come up most. We have not run these platforms on client work ourselves, so we will not score them or quote their pricing here; second-hand pricing in this category ages badly. They are pitched at larger brands and agencies running multi-market prompt panels, a different problem from the one most London small businesses are solving.

Which AI visibility tool should you pay for?

Our verdicts by budget, as of July 2026:

  • £0 a month: run the manual protocol monthly with a spreadsheet, and use SE Ranking’s free checker (five checks a day) for spot checks. Adequate for a single local business not yet seeing AI referrals.
  • Under £100 a month: SE Ranking Core at £76 a month billed annually is our default recommendation. You get the AI trackers and a full SEO platform in one.
  • Already paying for Semrush: add the AI Toolkit standalone at $99 (about £73) a month, or move to Semrush One Starter if you also need more websites and daily prompts. No point running two suites.
  • Agency or multi-brand team: start with whichever suite you already report from, and put the enterprise platforms on your evaluation list rather than buying blind. Our SEO tools hub lists everything we have actually tested.

We run this stack for clients: the manual panel to establish a baseline, then SE Ranking’s trackers once the trend matters, reported next to organic positions rather than instead of them. AI visibility is a second scoreboard, not a replacement for the first one.

Frequently asked questions

What are AI visibility tools?

AI visibility tools run a fixed panel of prompts through AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews on a schedule, then record whether your brand is mentioned, cited or linked in each answer. They turn one-off spot checks into trend data: mention rate, citation rate and share of voice against competitors, tracked month to month.

Free, if you do it by hand: a fixed panel of customer-style prompts run monthly in fresh chats and logged in a spreadsheet. Among paid tools, SE Ranking includes its AI trackers on ordinary self-serve plans, with Core at £95 a month or £76 a month billed annually as of July 2026, which also buys the full SEO platform.

Do GEO tools replace a normal rank tracker?

No. AI answers lean heavily on pages that already perform well in classic search, and organic listings remain the channel where clicks can actually be measured. Treat GEO tools as a second scoreboard beside your existing rank tracking. Both SE Ranking and Semrush bundle the two together, which is why we prefer suites at this budget.

Is the Semrush AI Toolkit included in a normal Semrush plan?

Not in the entry tier. As of July 2026 the $139 (about £102) a month SEO plan excludes prompt tracking. You either buy the AI Toolkit standalone at $99 (about £73) a month for one domain and 25 prompts, or take a Semrush One plan from $199 (about £146) a month, which bundles the SEO toolkit and AI tracking together.

Do small businesses need an enterprise AI monitoring platform?

Almost never. Dedicated enterprise platforms are built for large brands and agencies tracking many markets and engines at once. A UK small business gets the measurements that matter (mentions, citations, share of voice on the major platforms) from the manual protocol or an affordable suite. Spend the difference on the content and technical fixes that actually change the answers.
