Best Free Rank Trackers in 2026 (and Where Free Runs Out)

There is no free rank tracker good enough for agency work, but there are free routes that serve a small site well. As of July 2026, Google Search Console reports real queries, clicks, impressions and average position for nothing; a free Semrush account tracks 10 keywords with daily updates; Ubersuggest’s free plan tracks 25 keywords a project, weekly and desktop only; and SE Ranking’s 14-day trial runs with no card and up to 750 tracked keywords a day. Below we compare every free option in one table, show how to run a 50 keyword panel for nothing, and name the point where paying is cheaper than the workaround.

Why there is no good free rank tracker

As of July 2026, free rank checkers exist for spot checks, but none offers daily scheduled tracking, local targeting and reporting at usable volume.

For a Cambridge trade, a shop or a one-person practice with a handful of target phrases and one town to serve, free is genuinely enough, and we say that as an agency that sells SEO.

Our guide to the best rank tracking software for agencies ranks the paid, agency-grade trackers on price, update frequency, white label reporting and cost per keyword. This post stays inside the free tier and prices the workaround against the entry paid plans. Our free SEO tools roundup covers the rest of the zero-cost stack.

Google Search Console: the most truthful free rank data

Google Search Console is free forever, with no caps that matter in practice, and it is the most truthful rank data you will see, because it comes from Google’s own records rather than a tool sampling the results page. Verify your site by DNS record or HTML file and the Performance report shows real queries, real clicks and impressions, and an average position for each, by query, page, country and device. Positions come from real impressions, not live checks, so you only see positions for queries real people searched.

It is not a rank tracker, and its five limits are all documented. Average position blends every impression across every location and device, so a 4 in Cambridge and a 30 in Glasgow average out to a number nobody saw. The location filter stops at country level. Google hides rarely searched queries for privacy. History is a rolling 16 months: Google confirms that “Search Console keeps data for the last 16 months,” and older data is deleted permanently. And it shows nothing about competitors. Our guide to how to track keyword rankings sets out each limit against Google’s own documentation or against how the product is built, and our post on checking your Google rankings properly explains why an average and a live position can both be right.

Semrush free and Ubersuggest free: 10 and 25 keywords

A free Semrush account, as of July 2026, includes one project, 10 tracked keywords in Position Tracking with daily updates, 10 analytics report requests a day and a 100-page site audit. It never expires and needs no card. Those 10 keywords are the only genuine daily cadence on any free plan in this post, and the plan adds 50 Map Rank Tracker credits a month for map pack spot checks. Our Semrush free vs paid breakdown sets out where each cap bites. The seven-day Semrush trial is a different thing and needs a card.

Ubersuggest’s free account, as of July 2026, allows three searches a day, one domain project and up to 25 tracked keywords per project, updated weekly and desktop only, per the vendor’s help centre, with no time limit. Twenty-five beats 10, but a weekly, desktop-only reading cannot tell you what happened on Tuesday, or on a phone. Our Ubersuggest review covers the paid tiers, and our test of free keyword research tools covers the research side of these free plans.

SerpBear and Serposcope: unlimited, if you host them

Open source is the one route to unlimited free tracking; the bill comes in hours. SerpBear is a self-hosted rank tracker that follows unlimited keywords by calling third-party scraping APIs. Serposcope also tracks unlimited keywords free, but it is ageing and needs proxy configuration: a tinkerer’s tool. We have not verified hosting costs or which APIs they need, so we quote neither.

Two cautions. A self-hosted tracker is only as fresh as the API or proxy budget behind it, and SerpApi’s free tier allows 250 searches a month as of July 2026. And scraping Google’s results breaches Google’s terms of service; blocked IPs and parser breakage usually bite first. Our rank tracking API comparison covers the API routes.

Free trials: the practical free route

For a real project, the practical free option is a trial. As of July 2026, SE Ranking, AccuRanker and Nightwatch all offer 14 days with no credit card. SE Ranking’s trial, on the platform we track client keywords in, is fully functional with starter limits of 10 projects and 750 tracked keywords a day, updated daily, desktop and mobile separately, at city level across 190+ countries, so two weeks is enough for a true local baseline. Our full SE Ranking review covers the rest of the platform.

AccuRanker and Nightwatch we have not used ourselves, so we quote their July 2026 terms and nothing more. AccuRanker is a pure rank tracking product with daily plus on-demand updates and local or country level tracking. Nightwatch offers a 14-day full-feature trial with no card, tracks Google, YouTube, Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo and Google Maps, and updates daily plus on demand. Whichever you pick, export everything before the trial ends.

A 50 keyword panel for nothing, step by step

This is the free setup we would run for a small site: Search Console for the readings, a spreadsheet for the history, and the free Semrush account for the 10 keywords where a daily position matters. The 50 is the bottom of the 50 to 200 keyword range we use in paid setups, each keyword mapped to a page and the list frozen. Verify the property first, then:

  1. Choose 50 queries and freeze the list. Pick the commercial phrases already earning impressions in the Queries tab, add the ones you are targeting, and map each to one page; our guide to keyword research in Search Console shows how.
  2. Fix the filters. Country set to United Kingdom, desktop and mobile as separate views (Search Console splits by device but blends locations), the same date window every time.
  3. Export and match. Export the Queries table into a spreadsheet, look up your 50 frozen queries against it and copy across clicks, impressions and average position.
  4. Log on a fixed day each month. One column per month. One reading is noise; three months is a trend.
  5. Add the 10 that need a daily position. Put your 10 most valuable queries into the free Semrush account’s Position Tracking and read them beside the monthly averages.
  6. Export the full 16 months once a quarter. Older data is deleted permanently, so that export is the only history you will own. We diarise it for every client.
  7. Read it honestly. An average position of 8.5 is not position 8, and rising impressions with flat clicks may be a results page that changed shape, not a ranking gain.

Where free runs out

Free stops working at four predictable points.

  • You need a daily position, not a monthly average. Search Console averages, Ubersuggest updates weekly, and the free Semrush plan stops at 10 daily keywords.
  • You need a position for a town or a postcode. Search Console stops at country level, and we have no record of local targeting on any free plan at usable volume.
  • You need to see competitors. Search Console shows nothing about them by design, and neither free plan publishes a competitor allowance.
  • You need to report it. A monthly export is fine for one site; once a client expects a scheduled report, the sheet is the most expensive part of the setup. Our post on building a keyword ranking report covers what one should contain.

Two ticks and the arithmetic changes: SE Ranking Core on annual billing works out at around 4p a keyword a month, less than the hours the workaround takes.

The cheapest paid steps, by situation

All as of July 2026, vendor currency first:

  • Up to 200 keywords, daily, no reporting: Mangools SERPWatcher Basic tracks 200 keywords daily at $49 (about £36) a month, or $29.90 (about £22) a month on annual billing, around 15 cents a keyword. Both figures are third-party sourced, because Mangools loads prices dynamically; confirm before buying.
  • Already living in the free Semrush account: the entry SEO plan at $139 (about £102) a month, or $117.33 (about £86) billed annually (USD, ex VAT), lifts you to 500 tracked keywords with daily updates, which is a lot to pay if tracking is the only Semrush tool you use.
  • Local positions, competitors and a report someone else reads: SE Ranking Core at £95 a month, or £76 a month billed annually, tracks 2,000 keywords daily at city level across 190+ countries, keeps six months of history and connects to Search Console, GA4 and Looker Studio: around 4p per keyword per month on annual billing. Our SEO tools hub lists every platform we have tested.

We run client tracking this way: Search Console as the ground truth, exported quarterly, and SE Ranking for the daily, local and competitor readings, reported next to clicks and enquiries so nobody celebrates a position that earns nothing.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a completely free rank tracker?

Yes, with caps. Google Search Console is free forever and reports real queries, clicks, impressions and average position from Google’s own records. As of July 2026 a free Semrush account tracks 10 keywords daily and Ubersuggest’s free plan tracks 25 keywords a project, weekly and desktop only. Self-hosted SerpBear and Serposcope track unlimited keywords. None offers local targeting or reporting at usable volume.

Is Google Search Console a rank tracker?

Not in the strict sense, though it is the most truthful free rank data available. It reports an average position per query, blended across every location and device, rather than a live position from a fixed town. It stops at country level, hides rarely searched queries, keeps 16 months and shows nothing about competitors. Use it for real clicks and impressions, and a tracker for exact positions.

How many keywords can you track for free?

As of July 2026, 10 keywords with daily updates on a free Semrush account, 25 per project on Ubersuggest’s free plan with weekly, desktop-only updates, and unlimited keywords on self-hosted SerpBear or Serposcope at the cost of setup. Search Console has no keyword cap: it reports every query Google chooses to show. SE Ranking’s 14-day trial runs up to 750 tracked keywords a day with no card.

Do free rank trackers show local rankings?

Not at usable volume. Search Console’s location filter stops at country level, so Cambridge and Manchester positions blend together. The free Semrush plan’s 50 Map Rank Tracker credits a month allow map pack spot checks rather than tracking, as of July 2026, and we have no record of local targeting on Ubersuggest’s free plan. The free route to a local reading is a trial: SE Ranking’s 14-day, no-card trial targets city level across 190+ countries, as of July 2026.

When is it worth paying for a rank tracker?

When you need a daily position rather than a monthly average, a position for a specific town, competitor visibility, or a report someone else reads. As of July 2026 the lowest-priced routes we have costed are Mangools SERPWatcher Basic at $29.90 (about £22) a month on annual billing for 200 keywords, third-party sourced, and SE Ranking Core at £76 a month billed annually for 2,000 keywords with local targeting.
