Rank Tracking API: Options and Pricing Compared

Last updated: 7 July 2026

Changelog: 17 April 2026: first published. All prices checked against vendor pricing pages and developer documentation.

A rank tracking API lets you pull keyword position data into your own dashboards, client reports and internal tools, rather than logging into an SEO platform every time you need a number. In this guide we compare the realistic options as of July 2026, plus the honest answer on what Google itself offers (very little).

What is a rank tracking API?

A rank tracking API is a programmatic interface that returns keyword ranking data: which URL appears at which position for a given search term, location and device. Instead of reading positions in a tool’s interface, your own software requests the data over HTTP and does whatever it likes with it.

In practice, everything marketed as an SEO ranking API falls into one of two camps:

  1. SERP APIs return raw search results pages. You send a keyword and location, and it is your job to find your domain, calculate the position and store the history. DataForSEO and SerpApi sit here.
  2. Platform APIs return processed rank tracking data from an SEO platform’s own projects: positions, history and competitor comparisons, already computed. SE Ranking, Semrush and Ahrefs sit here.

The right camp depends on how much of the pipeline you want to own.

Who needs a rank tracking API?

The people who genuinely need a rank tracking API are agencies building custom client dashboards, SaaS products embedding rank data as a feature, and in-house teams joining ranking data with analytics in a warehouse such as BigQuery. Most other users are better served by a platform’s built-in interface and scheduled reports.

Typical use cases:

  • Agency dashboards. Pulling positions into Looker Studio or a bespoke portal so clients see rankings next to traffic and leads. Our notes on the best SEO reporting tools cover the no-code end of this.
  • Product features. A SaaS tool that shows users how their pages rank needs a data supplier.
  • Data warehousing. Blending positions with GA4 and revenue data, the pattern behind most of our agency SEO tech stack.

If none of those describe you, a normal rank tracker subscription is the cheaper, saner option.

Should you build or buy rank tracking data?

For almost everyone, buying rank tracking data is the right call. Building means scraping Google yourself: rotating proxies, solving CAPTCHAs, and rewriting parsers every time the SERP layout changes, all against Google’s terms of service. Buying means paying a provider a pound or two per thousand checks to absorb that pain.

The rough decision rule:

  • Buy a platform API if you want processed positions with history. Least engineering, fastest to a working dashboard.
  • Buy a SERP API if SERP data feeds your own product and you have developers to build the parsing, storage and history layer. Cheapest per check at volume.
  • Build your own scraper only if SERP data is literally your product. For an agency, this is a money pit.

There is also a maintenance cost people forget: SERP features keep changing what “position 3” even means. Providers update their parsers for you; your in-house scraper will not.

Is there an official Google rank tracking API?

No. Google offers no official rank tracking API, so every search for one ends at the same answer: the Search Console API, which only covers your own verified sites. Every commercial provider of Google ranking data is collecting SERPs itself, not reselling an official feed.

The Search Console API gives you average positions, clicks and impressions for your own verified properties, derived from real impressions rather than live SERP checks, with up to 16 months of history by query, page, country and device. No competitor data, no on-demand checks. It is free and genuinely useful, but it is not a rank tracker, and nothing Google sells fills that gap.

How do the main rank tracking API options compare?

The main rank tracking API options in July 2026 are SE Ranking (API included in every plan), DataForSEO (pay-as-you-go raw SERPs), SerpApi (subscription SERP scraping), Semrush (top-tier plan plus paid units) and Ahrefs (API v3 from the Lite plan up). Here is how they line up.

ProviderTypeAPI access and allowanceIndicative price (as of July 2026)
SE Ranking APIFull platform API: positions, keywords, backlinks, audits, AI searchIncluded in every plan: 25,000 credits/mo on Core, 100,000/mo on GrowthCore £95/mo, or £76/mo billed annually (UK pricing)
DataForSEO SERP APIRaw SERP data, pay as you goNo subscription; $50 (about £37) minimum deposit$0.60 (about £0) per 1,000 SERPs on the standard queue, $2.00 (about £1) per 1,000 live

Dollar figures are USD from each vendor’s own pricing page; SE Ranking figures are the GBP prices shown to UK visitors. All checked in July 2026.

SE Ranking is the odd one out in a good way: API access is included in every plan rather than gated behind a top tier. The rank tracker checks the top 100 results daily on Google, Bing, Yahoo and YouTube for desktop and mobile, and the API exposes those processed positions alongside keyword research, backlink data (a vendor-claimed index of 2.7 trillion backlinks) and audit results. Our full SE Ranking review covers the platform side.

DataForSEO is the price floor. One standard-queue SERP costs $0.0006 and covers 10 results, with multipliers for greater depth; DataForSEO’s quoted turnaround is around five minutes on the standard queue and about six seconds on the $2.00 (about £1) per 1,000 live mode. You get raw JSON and nothing else: no history, no project structure.

SerpApi trades a higher price for developer comfort: real-time responses, tidy structured output for dozens of SERP features, a genuinely free 250-search tier, and a “U.S. Legal Shield” clause on all plans.

Semrush keeps its Standard API behind its top tier. The developer docs still call the required subscription the Business plan, but the current pricing page sells that top tier as Advanced at $549 (about £403) a month ($455.67, about £335, a month billed annually, USD, as of July 2026). Even then your unit balance starts at zero until you buy a package on top. That gating is a big part of why teams look at Semrush alternatives; we compare the two head-on in SE Ranking vs Semrush. One nuance: the separate Map Rank Tracker API (local map positions) is free for all Semrush users, per the developer docs.

Ahrefs has opened API v3 to Lite plans and above, with unit allowances rising by tier and rank tracker endpoints on the list. Allowances and row caps are tight lower down (Lite returns at most 100 rows per request), so check the unit maths first. One helpful detail in the docs as of July 2026: the rank tracker endpoints themselves are marked free of unit charges; it is the wider data endpoints that consume the allowance. Our AccuRanker vs Ahrefs vs SE Ranking comparison looks at the tracking side more broadly.

AccuRanker, the dedicated tracker missing from the table above, keeps unlimited read API access for its Expert tier and above, with BigQuery and raw SERP HTML on Enterprise, and our AccuRanker review covers its pricing and export options.

What does a rank tracking API cost in practice?

The realistic cost of a rank tracking API in 2026 runs from under $20 (about £15) a month for raw SERP data to several hundred for a scraping subscription or a gated platform tier. The worked example below is an illustration from published list prices only, not a like-for-like benchmark.

Scenario: 500 keywords, one location, desktop and mobile, checked daily. That is 1,000 SERP checks a day, roughly 30,000 a month.

RouteMonthly cost for this scenario (as of July 2026)What you still have to build
DataForSEO, standard queue$18 (about £13) (30,000 x $0.0006, top-10 depth)Position extraction, storage, history, alerting
SerpApi, Big Data plan$275 (about £202) (30,000 searches)Position extraction, storage, history, alerting
SE Ranking, Core plan£95 (£76/mo annual); daily desktop and mobile checks run in-platform, 25,000 API credits included for pulling data outDashboard layer only
Semrush, Advanced plan$549 (about £403) before buying any API unitsDashboard layer only

Caveats worth stating plainly: the raw SERP routes price a top-10 snapshot, and greater depth multiplies DataForSEO’s cost; the platform routes depend on your keyword volume fitting the plan’s tracking limits; and credit consumption varies by endpoint, so run your numbers through each vendor’s own calculator first.

How should agencies plug rank data into client reporting?

The pattern that works for agency reporting is simple: let the rank tracking platform do the daily checking, then use its API to push positions into one reporting layer the client actually reads, next to traffic and enquiries. Rankings on their own persuade nobody; rankings beside leads do.

We are a London SEO and web agency, and the shape we recommend is a single monthly report per client with positions, sessions and conversions on one page; our client SEO report template shows the structure. The same API pattern extends beyond rankings: audit data can feed the same pipeline, as in our technical SEO audit in an hour walkthrough.

If you want to test the included-API route, SE Ranking’s 14-day free trial needs no credit card and includes API access, so a developer can hit the endpoints before anyone pays.

Rank tracking API FAQs

Is there a free rank tracking API?

Two options are genuinely free as of July 2026. The Google Search Console API returns positions, clicks and impressions for your own verified sites at no cost, and SerpApi’s free tier includes 250 searches a month. Beyond that, expect to pay: SE Ranking’s 14-day trial includes API access without a credit card, the cheapest way to test a full platform API.

Does Google have an official rank tracking API?

No. Google has never offered a public API for arbitrary keyword rankings, so there is no official Google rank tracking API to buy at any price. The Search Console API is the only official source, limited to sites you have verified. Every commercial ranking dataset comes from providers collecting SERPs themselves.

What is the difference between a SERP API and a rank tracking API?

A SERP API returns the raw contents of a search results page, leaving position calculation, storage and history to you. A rank tracking API returns processed ranking data from a platform’s ongoing projects: current positions, movement and competitor comparisons. SERP APIs are cheaper per request; rank tracking APIs replace far more engineering.

Do Semrush and Ahrefs include API access in their plans?

Partly. Ahrefs includes API v3 from its Lite plan upwards, with unit allowances from 100,000 to 2,000,000 a month by tier and a minimum of 50 units per request. Semrush is stricter: the Standard API requires the top-tier plan (called Business in the developer docs, sold as Advanced at $549, about £403, a month on the current pricing page), and the unit balance starts at zero until you buy a package on top, as of July 2026.

Can I track AI search visibility through an API?

Yes, this is emerging. SE Ranking’s API lists AI search endpoints covering brand and link presence across assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, tied to its AI Search add-on (£69 a month, or £55.20 on annual billing, as of July 2026). The measurement rules differ from classic rank tracking; our GEO rank tracking guide explains what is knowable.

Scraping Google’s results breaches Google’s terms of service, and the practical risks (blocked IPs, constant parser breakage) usually bite before any legal question does. Commercial SERP providers take on that burden, and some, such as SerpApi, advertise legal protection clauses. We are not lawyers; if scraping matters to your business model, take proper advice.
