Last updated: 7 July 2026

Changelog: 7 July 2026: all pricing re-verified against vendor pricing pages. 3 July 2026: first published.

The best link building tools do four different jobs: finding prospects, running outreach, analysing backlink profiles and monitoring the links you have already won. No single product does all four well, which is why most agencies run a small stack rather than one licence. This guide organises link building tools for SEO by job, with pricing verified in July 2026.

We are Luckywebs, a UK SEO and web agency based in London working with clients in home improvement trades, law and cooker e-commerce. This page covers the link half of the toolkit; our agency SEO tech stack guide covers the rest.

No. Link building tools do not build links: relationships and content do. A link building tool is software that makes the mechanical parts of the work faster (finding sites, finding emails, tracking conversations, measuring results), but the link itself is earned by giving another human a reason to reference you.

That distinction matters when you are budgeting. An agency with a strong content angle and a £50 per month stack will out-earn an agency with a £1,000 per month stack and nothing worth linking to. Before buying anything on this page, be honest about whether you have assets people would cite. If not, fix that first.

What link building software genuinely removes is drudgery: deduplicating prospect lists, guessing email formats, chasing follow-ups from a spreadsheet, checking whether last quarter’s links are still live. Those tasks eat hours and none of them need a human brain, and that framing shapes every recommendation below.

The best link building tools in 2026, by job, are: Hunter.io for prospect contact data, BuzzStream or Pitchbox for outreach, Ahrefs, SE Ranking or Majestic for backlink analysis, SE Ranking’s Backlink Monitor for tracking won links, and the relaunched HARO plus Source of Sources for digital PR. The table below compares entry pricing.

Prices are quoted in the currency each vendor’s pricing page showed us from the UK as of July 2026: SE Ranking, Hunter.io and Ahrefs display GBP, BuzzStream and Pitchbox price in USD. Majestic lists USD, GBP and EUR; we quote its USD figures.

Hunter.io is the prospecting tool we would put in almost any stack. It finds and verifies email addresses for the sites on your target list, which is the slowest part of prospecting to do by hand. As of July 2026 the free plan includes 50 credits per month, and the Starter plan is £41 per month (£28 per month billed annually) with 2,000 credits per month, auto-verification and lead enrichment.

The prospect list itself usually comes from a backlink analysis tool rather than a dedicated prospector. Running a competitor’s domain through SE Ranking’s backlink checker or Ahrefs’ index and exporting their referring domains gives you a pre-qualified list: every site on it has already linked to someone like you. Pair that export with Hunter for contact data and you have a working pipeline. One practice note: qualify before you enrich, because credits spent on sites you would never want a link from are wasted twice, in money and in reply-rate damage.

Which outreach tools do agencies use?

BuzzStream and Pitchbox are the two best-known dedicated outreach platforms, and they sit at different price points for different volumes. Both are outreach CRMs: they manage prospect records, send sequences from your own inbox, track opens and replies, and stop two colleagues emailing the same editor in the same week.

BuzzStream is the affordable, relationship-led option. As of July 2026 it starts at $49 (about £36) per month for one user and 500 contacts, with the Growth plan at $174 (about £128) per month for three users and 25,000 contacts. Paying for 12 months up front earns one month free. For a freelancer or a small team doing considered, personalised outreach, it is hard to argue with.

Pitchbox is the volume machine. As of July 2026 the Pro plan is $300 (about £220) per month ($210, about £154, per month billed annually) with two users and 2,000 outreach emails per month, rising to $600 (about £441) per month on Advanced ($420, about £309, per month billed annually), with a free trial. It earns its price only when outreach is a core service line with dedicated staff; below that, BuzzStream plus discipline does the same job.

Ahrefs, SE Ranking and Majestic are the three backlink analysis tools worth shortlisting in 2026, and the right one depends on whether you need a dedicated link database or a full SEO platform that includes one. All three let you audit any domain’s backlink profile, find competitors’ links and export prospect lists.

Ahrefs remains the reference point for pure link data. As of July 2026 its UK pricing is £99 per month for Lite, £199 for Standard and £359 for Advanced, with a cut-down Starter tier at £23 per month and two months free on annual billing for the main plans. There is no free trial, though Ahrefs Free gives verified site owners limited access to Site Explorer and Site Audit. It is excellent, and priced like it: see our AccuRanker vs Ahrefs vs SE Ranking comparison.

SE Ranking is the value pick for agencies, because the backlink checker comes bundled with rank tracking, site audit and reporting rather than sold alone. The vendor claims an index of 2.7 trillion backlinks across 420 million domains. As of July 2026 the Core plan is £95 per month (£76 per month annually) with a 14-day free trial and no card required. Our full SE Ranking review covers the whole platform, and our SE Ranking vs Semrush comparison shows where it beats the market leader on price.

Majestic is the specialist. As of July 2026 the Lite plan is $49.99 (about £37) per month (around $41.67, about £31, annually) with 1 million analysis units, Trust Flow and Topical Trust Flow metrics and a bulk backlink checker; Pro at $99.99 (about £73) per month adds the Historic Index, and both carry a 7-day money-back guarantee for first-time subscribers. For qualifying prospects at scale on Trust Flow, nothing else matches the price.

Backlink monitoring means tracking the links you have earned so you know when one is removed, switched to nofollow or lost to a page deletion, and it is the easiest stage to neglect. Links decay quietly; a monitoring tool turns that decay into an alert you can act on while the relationship is still warm.

SE Ranking’s Backlink Monitor is our pick here because it closes the loop inside the same platform the analysis came from: you add won links to a project, it watches their status, and lost links surface as a task rather than a surprise in next quarter’s audit. The same data feeds client reports directly, which pairs neatly with our client SEO report template and our round-up of the best SEO reporting tools.

Monitoring is also where link building meets technical SEO: a “lost” link is sometimes your own redirect chain or a deleted page, a five-minute fix at your end. Our guide to running a technical SEO audit in an hour covers those checks.

HARO itself is back, under new ownership, and that is the short answer to what replaced it. Cision folded HARO into a platform called Connectively, then discontinued Connectively on 9 December 2024. In April 2025 Featured.com acquired HARO from Cision and relaunched helpareporter.com as a free, sponsor-supported email digest sent three times a day, live from 22 April 2025.

Two alternatives matter alongside it. Source of Sources (SOS) is a free journalist-request email run by Peter Shankman, HARO’s original founder, launched in April 2024 after Cision folded HARO into Connectively. Qwoted is the paid, more curated marketplace option. The practical workflow: subscribe to both free feeds, filter hard for your clients’ niches, and answer only the requests where your client is a genuine expert.

Digital PR coverage on named publications is also the kind of source AI assistants draw citations from; see our piece on GEO rank tracking if AI visibility is on your roadmap.

The right link building tool stack depends on your volume and your role, not on feature lists. Below are the verdicts we would give four common setups, using July 2026 pricing.

Freelancer or consultant. Hunter.io free plan, BuzzStream Starter at $49 (about £36) per month, and SE Ranking Core at £95 per month (£76 annually) covering backlink analysis, monitoring, rank tracking and audits in one bill. Total: around £135 per month for a complete SEO link building setup.

Small agency (2 to 10 clients). SE Ranking Growth at £209 per month (£167.20 annually), Hunter Starter, BuzzStream Growth at $174 (about £128) per month, plus the Agency Pack (£49 per month, annual-only) for white-label reporting. Moving off a pricier incumbent? Our Semrush alternatives guide covers the maths.

Outreach-led agency. Pitchbox Advanced at $600 (about £441) per month plus Ahrefs Standard at £199 per month, both on monthly billing. Only defensible when link acquisition is a billed service line with dedicated headcount.

In-house marketer. Majestic Lite at $49.99 (about £37) per month for link metrics plus the free HARO and Source of Sources feeds. Lowest possible spend while keeping a real link building workflow alive between bigger projects.

For agencies, our overall value verdict is SE Ranking: it is the only platform here where the backlink tools arrive bundled with everything else an agency bills for.

Frequently asked questions

SE Ranking is our pick for a small agency because one subscription (£95 per month Core, £76 annually, as of July 2026) covers backlink analysis, backlink monitoring, rank tracking, audits and client reporting. Add Hunter.io for contact data and BuzzStream for outreach as volume grows.

Yes. Hunter.io’s free plan includes 50 credits per month, HARO and Source of Sources are free journalist-request emails, and SE Ranking offers a 14-day trial with no card required (all as of July 2026). A determined freelancer can run a genuine campaign on free tiers alone, just slowly.

Is HARO still going in 2026?

Yes. After Cision shut its successor Connectively down on 9 December 2024, Featured.com acquired HARO and relaunched helpareporter.com in April 2025 as a free, ad-supported email digest sent three times daily. Source of Sources, run by HARO’s original founder Peter Shankman, is the other free feed worth subscribing to.

Link building software manages the workflow of earning new links: prospecting, contact data and outreach sequences (Hunter.io, BuzzStream, Pitchbox). A backlink checker analyses links that already exist, yours or a competitor’s (Ahrefs, SE Ranking, Majestic). Most agencies need one of each, not two of the same kind.

A workable agency stack runs from roughly £135 per month (SE Ranking Core, Hunter Starter, BuzzStream Starter) to well over £600 per month once Pitchbox ($600, about £441, Advanced, billed in USD) and Ahrefs (£199 Standard) enter the picture, at July 2026 pricing. Scale the stack with billed outreach work rather than buying capacity you hope to grow into.

No, and be wary of anything claiming otherwise. AI can help draft outreach angles and summarise prospect sites, but a pitch that reads machine-written is the fastest way to get ignored or blocked by journalists and editors. Links are still earned by relevant assets and human relationships.

Every vendor publishes its own claimed figures, so treat them as marketing rather than audited data. SE Ranking claims 2.7 trillion backlinks across 420 million domains as of July 2026. The more useful test is coverage of your own niche: run the same three client domains through each trial and compare what each index actually found.
