Semrush vs Ahrefs compared for UK businesses: pricing, backlinks, rank tracking, site audit and AI visibility, with a clear verdict on which to pick.
Last updated: 11 July 2026 Changelog: first published, with all pricing and feature claims checked against vendor pages in July 2026.
Disclosure: some links on this page are affiliate links. If you buy through one we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. We only recommend tools we would genuinely use.
Semrush vs Ahrefs is the closest-run rivalry in SEO software, so here is our verdict up front. Semrush is the better all-round choice for most UK businesses: every paid plan includes daily rank tracking, a site audit with 140+ checks, local SEO add-ons and AI visibility tracking under one login. Ahrefs is the better specialist: its backlink tooling is excellent, the interface is quicker to learn, and its £23 a month Starter plan is the cheapest credible entry point of the two. Pick Semrush if you report to clients, run local campaigns or care about AI search. Pick Ahrefs if links are your priority and the budget is tight.
What is the difference between Semrush and Ahrefs?
Semrush and Ahrefs are both subscription SEO platforms, but they grew from different roots. Semrush began as a competitive research tool and has expanded into an all-in-one marketing platform: keyword research, rank tracking, site audits, backlink analysis, PPC research, local listings management and an AI Visibility Toolkit that tracks how ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google’s AI Mode mention your brand. Ahrefs began as a backlink index and still feels like a product built by link specialists: Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer and Rank Tracker sit on top of a crawler the company says processes five million pages a minute. In practice the difference is breadth against depth. Semrush tries to cover the whole marketing job in one place, which is why we lean on it for competitor analysis and client reporting. Ahrefs concentrates on organic search data and keeps its interface leaner as a result. Both are serious tools; neither is a bad buy.
Semrush pros:
- Daily rank tracking on every paid plan
- Site Audit runs 140+ technical checks
- Semrush Local handles listings from $30 (about £22) per location
- AI Visibility Toolkit tracks five AI engines from the same dashboard
- Free plan, plus a 7 day trial of the paid tiers
Semrush cons:
- Prices are quoted in US dollars, even for UK buyers
- The sheer number of tools takes longer to learn
- Extra seats cost from $45 (about £33) a month
Ahrefs pros:
- Backlink data and link analysis are the strongest part of the product
- £23 a month Starter plan, with UK prices shown in pounds
- Free tier for sites you have verified
- Fast, uncluttered interface
Ahrefs cons:
- Rank Tracker updates weekly by default; daily updates need the Project Boost add-on
- No dedicated listings management product for local SEO
- Brand Radar AI tracking is capped at a small allowance on plans; deeper tracking costs extra
- Agency reviews note that built-in reports carry Ahrefs branding
How do Semrush and Ahrefs compare feature by feature?
To compare Ahrefs and Semrush fairly, you have to look at what each plan actually includes rather than the marketing pages. The table below summarises the position as of July 2026, with vendor claims labelled as exactly that. Two rows decide most purchases in our experience. First, rank tracking: Semrush updates positions daily on every paid plan, while Ahrefs updates weekly unless you pay for the Project Boost add-on. Second, scope: Semrush bundles local SEO, PPC research and AI visibility into one platform, while Ahrefs sells its AI tracking separately and has no listings product at all. If your work is pure link building and content research, none of that may matter; if you want one invoice covering the whole job, it matters a great deal. Our full Semrush review covers each toolkit in depth.
| Feature | Semrush | Ahrefs |
|---|---|---|
| Keyword research | Keyword Magic Tool with intent filters and clustering | Keywords Explorer with click and traffic-potential metrics |
| Backlink index | 43 trillion links (vendor claim, July 2026) | 35 trillion external links (vendor claim, July 2026) |
| Rank tracking updates | Daily on all paid plans | Weekly by default; daily via Project Boost add-on |
| Site audit | 140+ checks | Site Audit included; free version for verified sites |
| Local SEO | Semrush Local from $30 (about £22) per location | No dedicated local SEO product |
| AI visibility | AI Visibility Toolkit: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode | Brand Radar: small allowance on paid plans, full product priced separately |
| Reporting | My Reports builder; report add-ons at $10 (about £7) or $20 (about £15) per report a month (white-label on the $20, about £15, tier) | Report Builder included; reports carry Ahrefs branding per agency reviews |
| PPC research | Full advertising research toolkit | Limited paid-search data inside Site Explorer |
| Free option | $0 free plan, plus a 7 day trial | Free tier for sites you own |
| Entry price | $139 (about £102) a month (SEO plan) | £23 a month (Starter) |
Which tool has the bigger backlink index?
Semrush and Ahrefs both claim enormous backlink indexes, and both figures are vendor claims rather than independently audited numbers. As of July 2026 Semrush states its index holds 43 trillion links. Ahrefs states 35 trillion external backlinks across 493.9 billion pages and 500.4 million domains, refreshed every 15 to 30 minutes. The two companies count differently (live versus historical links, internal versus external), so treating those totals as a scoreboard is a mistake. What actually matters is coverage of your niche, and the only honest way to judge that is to test both on domains you know. Here is the five-minute check we use:
- Open free accounts or trials on both platforms.
- Run your own domain plus two close competitors.
- Compare referring domains you know exist: suppliers, press coverage, directories.
- Spot-check twenty links in each tool to see how many are still live.
- Pick the index that best reflects reality in your market.

How does Semrush vs Ahrefs pricing compare?
Semrush vs Ahrefs pricing is complicated by one thing UK buyers should know before anything else: Semrush quotes prices in US dollars while Ahrefs shows UK visitors prices in pounds sterling. Your final Semrush cost in pounds depends on the exchange rate and any card fees on the day, so the two lineups are never perfectly comparable. As of July 2026, Semrush sells four paid tiers: SEO at $139 (about £102) a month ($117.33, about £86, on annual billing), Starter at $199 (about £146) ($165.17, about £121), Pro+ at $299 (about £220) ($248.17, about £182) and Advanced at $549 (about £403) ($455.67, about £335), with extra seats from $45 (about £33) a month. The old Pro, Guru and Business plans no longer appear on the main pricing page, so treat any roundup still quoting them as out of date. Ahrefs starts far lower: Starter at £23 a month and Lite at £99 a month, with higher tiers above that. Full breakdowns live on our Semrush pricing guide.
Semrush plans (USD, as of July 2026):
| Plan | Monthly | Annual (per month) |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | n/a |
| SEO | $139 (about £102) | $117.33 (about £86) |
| Starter | $199 (about £146) | $165.17 (about £121) |
| Pro+ | $299 (about £220) | $248.17 (about £182) |
| Advanced | $549 (about £403) | $455.67 (about £335) |
Add-ons: extra seats from $45 (about £33) a month, My Reports paid reports at $10 (about £7) (Base) or $20 (about £15) (Pro, the tier with white-labelling) per report a month, Semrush Local at $30 (about £22) (Base) or $60 (about £44) (Pro) per location.
Ahrefs plans (GBP, UK pricing, as of July 2026):
| Plan | Monthly |
|---|---|
| Free tier | £0 (for verified sites) |
| Starter | £23 |
| Lite | £99 |
Notes: Rank Tracker updates weekly on all plans unless you add Project Boost; API access starts on Lite with 100,000 integration units a month.
The Semrush trial of the paid tiers runs for 7 days and takes a card; the $0 free plan needs no card at all. We explain the difference in our Semrush free trial guide.
How fresh is the data in each tool?
Data freshness is where Semrush and Ahrefs genuinely diverge, and it is the difference we point clients to most often. Semrush updates tracked keyword positions daily on every paid plan. Ahrefs updates tracked keywords weekly by default on all plans, and you pay extra for the Project Boost add-on if you want daily numbers. For agencies reporting weekly, or anyone iterating pages and watching the response, a seven-day lag is a real cost. On backlinks the picture flips somewhat: Ahrefs states its index refreshes every 15 to 30 minutes (vendor claim, July 2026), and its crawler has an excellent reputation for surfacing new links quickly. Keyword volume databases in both tools update on slower cycles, so treat any single volume figure as an estimate, not a measurement. If rank data drives your decisions, read our guide on how to track keyword rankings before you commit either way.
Which is better for small businesses, freelancers and agencies?
Ahrefs or Semrush is really three different questions depending on who is buying, so here are our three verdicts rather than one. The pattern across the campaigns we run at Luckywebs is consistent: the more your work involves clients, locations or reporting, the harder it is to beat Semrush; the more your work is pure organic research on your own projects, the better value Ahrefs becomes. Before the verdicts, a quick self-test:
- I need daily rank tracking without add-ons: leans Semrush
- I manage Google Business Profiles or local listings: leans Semrush
- I send branded reports to clients: leans Semrush
- Link building is the core of my work: leans Ahrefs
- I want the lowest possible monthly cost in pounds: leans Ahrefs
- I want AI search visibility included, not bolted on: leans Semrush
Our verdict for UK small businesses
For a UK small business asking which is better for small business budgets, Ahrefs Starter at £23 a month is the cheapest way into professional-grade data, and for a site owner doing their own SEO alongside our DIY SEO guide it is a sensible first subscription. But if you serve local customers, Semrush earns its higher price: daily tracking plus Semrush Local from $30 (about £22) per location covers the jobs in our local SEO checklist that Ahrefs simply does not do.
Our verdict for freelancers
For freelance SEOs, the honest comparison is Ahrefs Lite at £99 against Semrush SEO at $139 (about £102). Ahrefs wins on speed and link data; Semrush wins on breadth, keyword research depth and daily tracking. We would pick Semrush for a generalist serving several clients and Ahrefs for a content or digital PR specialist. Run both trials on a live client project before deciding.
Our verdict for agencies
For agencies, Semrush is our clear recommendation. Seats from $45 (about £33) a month, white-label My Reports at $20 (about £15) per report a month, Semrush Local across client locations and the AI Visibility Toolkit make it the closer fit for retainer work. Ahrefs remains a superb second tool for link audits, but its reports carry Ahrefs branding per agency reviews, which pushes most agencies towards separate SEO reporting tools anyway.
When should you pick neither Semrush nor Ahrefs?
Neither Semrush nor Ahrefs is the right answer for every budget, and pretending otherwise would make this comparison worthless. If your ceiling is under about £80 a month and you still want an all-in-one platform (rank tracking, audits, backlinks, reporting), SE Ranking is the option we recommend: its Core plan costs £95 a month, falling to £76 a month on annual billing, with a 14-day trial that needs no card (as of July 2026). We compare it directly with Semrush in our SE Ranking vs Semrush comparison, and our SE Ranking review covers where it falls short of the big two. If even that is a stretch, start with our roundups of the best free SEO tools and free keyword research tools, or browse the wider field in our guide to Semrush alternatives.
How did we reach this verdict?
Luckywebs is a London SEO and web agency, and this verdict comes from the tools we pay for and use on client campaigns, not from a features list. Mo Rafi leads our technical SEO, Katy Mironenko is our Head of SEO, and Robert Malnieks runs client strategy; between them these platforms sit behind results like Circa London’s 40% increase in enquiries, RakLAW’s 60% lift in leads and TWF’s 44% revenue growth. We hold a 4.7 star rating from 60 Google reviews. Our testing approach for every tool on this site (what we score, what we ignore, and how affiliate deals are kept away from verdicts) is documented on our how we test page, and every recommendation here links back to the full write-ups in our SEO tools hub. Where a figure is a vendor claim, we say so; where we could not verify something, we left it out.
Semrush vs Ahrefs: frequently asked questions
Quick answers to the questions people ask us most about Semrush and Ahrefs.
Is Ahrefs cheaper than Semrush?
At the entry level, yes. Ahrefs Starter costs £23 a month against Semrush’s cheapest paid plan at $139 (about £102) a month (as of July 2026). Like for like in the middle, the gap narrows: Ahrefs Lite is £99 a month while Semrush SEO is $139 (about £102), and Semrush includes daily rank tracking at that price where Ahrefs charges extra for it. Remember Semrush bills in US dollars, so your pound cost moves with the exchange rate.
Do Semrush and Ahrefs have free versions?
Yes, both. Semrush has a $0 free plan with limited daily usage that needs no card. Ahrefs has a free tier for websites you have verified ownership of, which is genuinely useful for auditing your own site. Neither replaces a paid plan for competitor research, but both are the right way to learn each interface. New to the platform? Start with our Semrush beginner’s guide.
Do I need both Semrush and Ahrefs?
Most businesses do not. Semrush and Ahrefs overlap on roughly the same core jobs: keywords, rankings, audits and backlinks. Larger agencies sometimes run both, using Semrush for tracking, local and reporting and Ahrefs for link research, and that is a defensible spend at scale. For everyone else, pick one, learn it properly, and put the saved subscription money into content or links instead.
Which has more accurate data, Semrush or Ahrefs?
Neither vendor publishes independently audited accuracy figures, so honest answer: it varies by market. Semrush claims a 43 trillion link index; Ahrefs claims 35 trillion external links refreshed every 15 to 30 minutes. Both are vendor claims as of July 2026, counted on different definitions. Run the five-step index test earlier on this page against your own domain, and check positions against Search Console using our guide to checking your Google rankings.
Which is better for AI search visibility?
Semrush, on value. Its AI Visibility Toolkit tracks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode inside the same platform, and we cover it in our Semrush AI Toolkit guide. Ahrefs Brand Radar tracks similar engines, but plans only include a small monthly allowance and the standalone product starts from £159 a month (UK pricing page, July 2026). For the strategy side, see our guide to optimising for AI Overviews.
How long is the Semrush free trial?
Seven days, and it requires a card for the paid tiers; the separate $0 free plan needs no card (as of July 2026, checked on semrush.com). Cancel inside the window and you pay nothing. Our Semrush free trial guide explains how to get the most out of the week, including which reports to run first.
Which should a UK small business pick, Ahrefs or Semrush?
If the budget is the deciding factor, Ahrefs Starter at £23 a month, or SE Ranking if you want an all-rounder for less than the big two. If you serve local customers or need daily rank data, Semrush is worth the higher spend for Semrush Local and its tracking cadence. Choosing between Semrush and the budget end of the market? Our Semrush vs Ubersuggest comparison covers that trade-off.
